LED lighting and LED light bulbs are solid-state lamps that use light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as their light source. LED lamps offer long service life and high energy efficiency compared to fluorescent lights and incandescent lamps.

Commercial LED lighting products use semiconductor light-emitting diodes as their source of illumination. This technology allows LED lamps to be made interchangeable with other lighting lamps. Assemblies of high-power light-emitting diodes can be used to replace incandescent or fluorescent lamps. Some LED lamps have bases that are directly interchangeable with incandescent light bulbs. Also, LED lamps are sometimes marked to show the watt rating of an incandescent lamp with the approximate same lumen output.

LED lighting has been widely available over the past decade, though it is just starting to become one of the more popular lighting options on the market. The benefits the technology offers have made it one of the most popular lighting choices for commercial applications where low maintenance and high-quality light are required. LED light sources are highly efficient, and the rated lamp life of LED light bulbs ranges from 60,000 hours to over 100,000. This gives LED lighting a low total cost of ownership. Plus, LED light bulbs are available in a range of models to meet the needs of a wide variety of applications..

LED lighting technology is manufactured in many different forms, including linear T8 tubes, small MR-16 lights, candelabra lights, holiday rope lighting, and more. From general-purpose overhead LED lighting to task and accent lighting, LEDs are also one of the most versatile lighting sources on the market. In addition to low energy usage, LEDs can also be a dimmable light source and offer high-quality color rendering, making them ideal for creating an inviting environment that supports comfort and productivity. LED lights are also perfect for commercial spaces such as restaurants and retail that need indoor lighting just right for customers.

Compared to fluorescent bulbs or compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), the major advantages to LED bulbs are that they contain no mercury and turn on instantly. Additionally, their lamp life is not affected by switching on and off – this makes them suitable for light fixtures which are frequently turned on and off, such as bathrooms, hallways, or closets. LED light bulbs are also mechanically robust, helping them stand up to heavy use more than most other artificial light sources, which tend to be fragile. White light-emitting diode lamps have a longer life expectancy and higher output (the same light with less electricity) than most other types of energy-efficient lighting. Even more efficient than fluorescent light bulbs, which were the energy-efficient commercial standard for many years.

Another benefit of LED lights is that their light sources are compact, allowing a high amount of flexibility in designing lighting fixtures. They also provide good control of light distribution with small reflectors or lenses. Due to the small size of LEDs, control of the spatial distribution of illumination is extremely flexible. This means the light output and spatial distribution of an LED array can be controlled with no efficiency loss. For commercial lighting contractors and interior designers, LED lights are one of the easiest and most flexible lighting sources to work with.

LED lamps have no glass tubes to break (some models do have a decorative glass bulb) and their internal parts are rigidly supported, which makes them highly resistant to vibration and impact. With the proper driver electronics design, an LED lamp can be made dimmable over a wide range because there is no minimum current needed to sustain lamp operation.
