Ballasts control the amount of electricity powering a fluorescent or LED light source. Without a ballast to limit the voltage or current across a lamp, either the lamp or the circuit will quickly fail. Electronic ballasts have become the most common lighting ballast technology, replacing the less-efficient magnetic ballast in most applications. Electronic ballasts also greatly reduce or eliminate harmonic distortion (lamp noise), flicker, or fluctuations in light output.

The most common lighting ballast is the rectangular linear fluorescent lighting ballast, which is usually housed in the fixture with one to four T5, T8 or T12 linear fluorescent lamps. For compact fluorescent lamps that aren't self-ballasted, CFL ballasts supply the appropriate voltage and current to the lamps on the circuit. For LED lamps and fixtures, an LED driver performs the same function as a ballast does for fluorescent lamps. We also offer emergency ballasts, which supply power to the lamp during an outage from an integral battery.

The proper electronic ballast protects the light source from damage, and helps maintain high-quality illumination throughout the life of the lamp.
