Fluorescent Lamp Prices to Rise on Rare Earth Metal Phosphors Shortage | July 12, 2011
Look out for fluorescent lamp price increases in the near future. This includes all CFL's, T8's, T5's, and similar products. Nearly all lighting manufacturers have made us aware recently of dramatic price increases across the board.
The sudden price increase comes from a few different variables but all have the same source - Chinese rare earth metals. China manufacturers 95% of the world's products that include rare earth metals, which are also mostly mined in the country as well. Recently China has dramatically reduced its production of these rare earth phosphors, and has initiated a dramatic increase in pricing for these elements used in fluorescent lamps, partly as part of their goal to reduce exports by 33%. The result has included lamp pricing increases anywhere from 10-50% from what we have seen from our manufacturers so far. Most of the price increases are being instituted around July 15th, and more increases may come in the future.
